Post office and Plaza

All this week has been cool and rainy, and last night was the coldest so far. Yoli and I both woke in the night. I was having some trouble breathing, but I made some chamomile tea and after a while I got back to sleep.

Today has proved to be warmer. After breakfast we headed downtown to visit the post office and the Plaza.

I was surprised how small the post office was. It’s the only one in the city. We bought a few postcards to send, filled them out, then paid for stamps. The lady says they will take 2 weeks to get to the U.S., so I suppose we will beat them home.

Climbing the cathedral

Friday morning we headed over to the _Plaza 24 de Septiembre_ at the heart of Santa Cruz. The scenic cathedral at one corner of the plaza, the _Basilica Menor de San Lorenzo_, opened a _mirador_ several years ago. In 2008, “we tried to go up”:http://www.joshrenaud.com/bolivia/archives/2008/09/putzing_around.html, but could not because we got there after 11:30 a.m. and it closed at noon.

We got a late start to our morning (as we usually do), and it was looking like this attempt would turn out to be a repeat of two years ago. But we got to the cathedral right on time and had no problems going up.

Maybe we are a little crazy, climbing twisty stairs with four children in tow, just for a nice view. But we like “church towers”:http://www.joshrenaud.com/bolivia/archives/2005/01/churches_convents_and_crypts_oh_my.html, “faros”:http://www.joshrenaud.com/bolivia/archives/2005/01/down_a_mineshaft_and_into_a_mac_store.html, and “observation towers”:http://www.joshrenaud.com/bolivia/archives/2008/09/paradise.html. That’s the way we roll.

Putzing around the Plaza

Thursday morning we decided to take the girls to visit Santa Cruz’s Plaza.

A couple years ago they sort of revamped the plaza. They removed many trees and made other changes. At the time it didn’t look so good, but now that the trees have grown back it looks much better. There are also city guards all over the place who keep away street vendors and vagrants. This is somewhat controversial, but I suppose it does make the Plaza more inviting for tourists.

Good weather and the Lord of the Rings… who could ask for anything more?

Well, I’m still behind with my entries. This entry was originally written Saturday.

Saturday was Registration for the seminario. There were many students who came to get registered for classes. They come from all over South America, and some of them are Indians. Originally I was supposed to help calculate the total cost for students’ books as they came through the line. But it turned out that they didn’t need me to do that, so I stayed in the office with Yoli and the other secretary, Noemi (not Yoli’s sister). I ended up working on the website. I did some basic layout things and also visited many other seminario websites for ideas. I also am thinking about revising the seminario’s logo using Adobe Illustrator. We’ll see how that goes.
